Privacy Policy

Boonpoint is built around a simple promise: we collect as little as we possibly can. Here's exactly what we collect, why, and where it lives.

What we collect

• Your location, while the app is open. We use it to show you the map and to verify that you actually slept at a spot before logging it to your trip journal. Raw GPS coordinates never leave your phone.
• Your Apple user ID (from Sign in with Apple). An opaque, anonymous identifier Apple gives us. We never see your name, email, or any other personal information.
• Your trip journal entries. Stored on your iPhone and synced through your private iCloud database. No other Boonpoint user — and no Boonpoint employee — can see them.
• Photos, fuel costs, and companions you add to your trip journal. All stored locally on your iPhone.
• Community reviews you choose to post. If you post a public review, the star rating, your short note, any photos you attach (stripped of location metadata before upload), any optional "what's here" amenity tags, the spot, and your anonymous Apple user ID are sent to and stored on our server, and shown publicly to other Boonpoint users. This is the only content that leaves your device — and only if you post. Reading other travelers' reviews requires no account. See "Community reviews" below.

What we don't collect

• No analytics SDKs. No third-party trackers. No advertising IDs.
• No background location tracking. We never watch where you go.
• No name, email, phone number, or social profile.
• No payment data — purchases go through Apple's StoreKit and we only ever see "you bought monthly" or "you bought yearly."

How verified stays work

When you tap "Track a stay here," Boonpoint compares your current location to the spot and stores the spot ID and start time locally. If you're within 200 meters, the stay is marked confirmed — that presence is the proof, and there is no minimum stay length. You can then log it to your trip journal, and review the spot, for the next 48 hours from anywhere. The check happens on your device, and Boonpoint only reads your location while the app is open — there is no background tracking. The one exception: if you choose to post a public review of a spot, a record of that verified stay (the spot and the stay window — not your live location) is sent to our server so we can confirm the review is genuine. If you never post a review, nothing about your stays leaves your device.

iCloud sync

Your trip journal entries and pending stays sync through your personal iCloud private database. This is a Boonpoint-owned container that only your Apple ID can read or write to. We don't have access to it.

Community reviews

Community reviews are the one part of Boonpoint that is public and stored on our own server. When you post a review, we store the star rating, your note, any photos you attach (location metadata is stripped from photos before they leave your device), any optional "what's here" amenity tags, the spot, an anonymous account identifier, and a record of the verified stay it's tied to — and we display all of it to other Boonpoint users. Posting is a per-stay choice: the app shows a share toggle and tells you exactly what becomes public before anything is sent. We never attach your name or email. You can report a review or block its author in the app; we remove content that violates our Terms within 24 hours. Browsing reviews requires no account.

Third parties

• Recreation.gov, USFS, BLM, OpenStreetMap, California State Parks: public APIs that return campsite data. Boonpoint sends your viewport bounding box; no personal information is included in the request.
• Apple WeatherKit: queried for current conditions and sunrise/sunset at the spot you're viewing. Apple's privacy policy applies.
• Apple Sign in with Apple, StoreKit, CloudKit: standard Apple platform services, governed by your iCloud account.

Children

Boonpoint is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect any information from them.
